The much anticipated event did not disappoint and was hailed as the band's best show to date.
The evening kicked off with COAST support favourite Hayley Angel closely followed by new discovery Georgette Cullum. Georgette gave a stirring rendition of the Paul Eastham song "New Orleans" during her set. Both support acts were warmly received by a packed auditorium.
Tam Stewart then entered stage right to kick off the COAST set with a rousing bagpipe medley comprising The Dark Island, Scotland The Brave and Itchy Fingers.
As Tam left the stage to a huge cheer from the crowd COAST emerged to a raptuous welcome.
They kicked off their set with the ever popular 'Big Blue Sky' from their debut album. This was followed hot on the heels by the aptly named live favourite 'We Made It'. Next on the agenda was the song that heralded in COAST's first gig some 20 months ago at The Storm Club in London's Leicester Square. We are of course talking about the uplifting 'Work Song'.
Next up, and bringing the tempo down after an electric start, was another live favourite from COAST's first single, namely 'Sepia Eyes'. Then, in tribute to the Danish posse who had flown over especially for the show, COAST performed the one Runrig cover of the evening, 'In Scandinavia'.
The show approached the half way mark with 'To The Windward', another song from the new album and one which Runrig lead singer Bruce Guthro described as 'Awesome' when he first heard it on Karin Ingram's Sunday Getherin' show on Radio Borders.
COAST were then joined on stage by Georgette Cullum to sing backing vocals on a trio of songs - 'Keep Loving' and 'Reckless Engineer' from the album and 'These Walls' from the Great Crowd CD single.
Tam then returned to the stage to perform a stirring version of the 'Skye Boat Song' with Paul on piano. Spot the deliberate spelling mistake on the setlist...!
Talking of deliberate mistakes, the band then launched into album opener 'Oceanos' instead of the setlisted instrumental 'Ruabhal'. They'd have got away with it if it wasn't for the pesky lead singer announcing the gaff to the masses!
It mattered not to the pumped up audience as the band followed up 'Ruabhal' with the barnstorming 'Sword Dance', the song where Chris Lappage trades up to a lead guitar with a little more 'grunt'!
This brought us to the epic set closer 'America', the full stonking 9 minute version. As COAST left the stage to a roar of decibel busting proportions an encore was demanded and the band were happy to oblige with the rousing Southampton Football Club anthem 'Colours', complete with new opening accoustic arrangement.
COAST closed the show with a reprise of the signature live song 'Big Blue Sky'.
The event had been a huge success and the Talking Heads was left buzzing well into the night.
The album was snapped up by showgoers, some buying several for friends and family who couldn't attend. As glowing reviews of the album hit internet networking sites over the next 48 hours online albums sales exceeded all expecations to the point where the COAST website's bandwidth was creaking at the seams!
All in all, a truely amazing show which will hopefully catapult COAST to greater heights in 2010.
COAST Rock? You bet they did!
