Supporting COAST in Oban, and now Inverness, is Scottish singer-songwriter Andrew Huggan.

Andrew has been playing music ever since he was a small child but it's only within the last decade that he started to take it more seriously. During the Hebridean Celtic Festival in 2007 he got the chance to play his songs “Take Me Away Across the Sea” and “Lonely Lonely Night” live on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal.

In summer 2009 he was invited to play at Elphin Drift, an acoustic evening in Yorkshire. His performance went down well with the audience and he was invited back to play at the next Elphin Drift which was in November.

Tickets For Melrose Gig
Now On Sale

Next up for COAST was another full live set at The Swan in the Southampton suburb of Woolston. Another rousing gig in front of a packed audience.

Another couple of hours sleep and COAST were on the road again, this time setting out at 5am on Sunday to be in Glasgow early afternoon in time for sound checks at 'Celtic Connections', Scotland’s largest Celtic music festival.

Despite two early set backs (one of the support vans breaking down on the M3 and, somewhat more importantly, forgetting to pack the food for the journey!) the band hit a bustling Glasgow city centre on time. The kit was unloaded into the Royal Concert Hall and the tour bus parked up (eventually!).

After squeezing in a swift lunch and a well deserved beer, COAST headed off for their sound check on the Danny Kyle Open Stage. The production team’s eyes got wider and jaws dropped lower as each trolley of COAST kit was wheeled in! The logistics of fitting in a 6 piece rock band and four other acts, one of which was a 30 strong ladies choir, in a two hour time slot was just starting to dawn on them!

After much haste and equipment juggling COAST completed what must have been one of their loudest sound checks of all time! The scene was now set for COAST’s debut appearance in Scotland.

The band were given the last slot of the evening (due mainly, one suspects, to the logistics of getting them offstage any earlier!). The time spent waiting only added to the tension as the other acts took to the stage one by one (or 30 by 30 in the case of the aforementioned ladies choir!).

COAST finally took to the stage 20 minutes later than billed at 18:50. The band broke the audience in gently….with the full 9 minute overdrive version of America!

This received a warm reaction and next up was The Reckless Engineer. It was at this point that COAST fans around the world gave a collective yelp as the live internet stream of the show cut out! Celtic Music Radio were covering the event and they automatically cutover to their next show at 19:00. However, the next online sound was a collective sigh of relief when the station switched back to COAST! It transpired after the event that Celtic Music Radio had the biggest number of online listeners during COAST’s set since last year’s St Patrick’s Day broadcast!

By this stage the audience appeared to be gripped by what they were hearing. Paul’s passionate piano intro to Reckless Engineer was a stunning contrast to the guitar laden finale of America. The anthemic ending to Engineer, which has fast become a live favourite, led perfectly into the rousing finale of ‘Big Blue Sky’, the audience by this stage joining in with the chants in all the right places!

As the set came to an end the audience were calling for an encore but, alas, time had run out and the proceedings were brought to a reluctant end. Many people came up to the band after the show to congratulate them on their performance and a healthy number of debut albums swapped hands.

A couple of well earned beers later and it was time to hit the road again and face the 9 hour return trip to the South coast. Unsurprisingly, the number of comfort breaks on the journey home surpassed those on the way up by a considerable margin!

The adventure came to an end not long before dawn broke over the Solent and the band headed their separate ways for either bed or, in some cases, a return to the day job!

COAST will discover on Saturday (30th Jan) whether their performance has earned them a place on the main bill at next year’s Celtic Connections festival. The jury is out on whether the traditional Celtic music community are ready for COAST’s unique twist on the genre!

Something for the weekend? Not ‘arf !

resorting to a shameless play-on-words or purloining a well known phrase for our article headlines. With that in mind, here’s a few working titles for this piece that didn’t quite make the cut:

“Something for the weekend? Yes please... two gigs, a radio show appearance and a 24 hour round trip to Scotland!”

“If Carlsberg did long weekends….”

“You crazy fools. I ain’t getting on no plane!”

As long weekends go, they don’t get much longer than this. Things kicked off on Friday evening with a full live set at the Old Mill in Holbury near Southampton.

A few hours sleep later and on Saturday morning the band were on their way to the BBC Radio Solent studios in the centre of Southampton to appear on the Sally Taylor radio show. Sally is a well known celebrity in the south of England who also presents the nightly regional magazine programme ‘South Today’ on BBC1.

COAST kicked off their acoustic set with a rendition of ‘Colours’, the Southampton Football Club anthem which was released last year as the official single for ‘Saints Aid’ – a fan initiative to raise funds for the survival of the football club which at the time was in administration and close to going out of existence.

Sally interviewed the band and they played two additional songs, namely 'Big Blue Sky' and 'Oceanos'.

The sell out COAST debut album launch show rocked the Talking Heads in Southampton this weekend.
The much anticipated event did not disappoint and was hailed as the band's best show to date.

The evening kicked off with COAST support favourite Hayley Angel closely followed by new discovery Georgette Cullum. Georgette gave a stirring rendition of the Paul Eastham song "New Orleans" during her set. Both support acts were warmly received by a packed auditorium.

Tam Stewart then entered stage right to kick off the COAST set with a rousing bagpipe medley comprising The Dark Island, Scotland The Brave and Itchy Fingers.

As Tam left the stage to a huge cheer from the crowd COAST emerged to a raptuous welcome.

They kicked off their set with the ever popular 'Big Blue Sky' from their debut album. This was followed hot on the heels by the aptly named live favourite 'We Made It'. Next on the agenda was the song that heralded in COAST's first gig some 20 months ago at The Storm Club in London's Leicester Square. We are of course talking about the uplifting 'Work Song'.

Next up, and bringing the tempo down after an electric start,  was another live favourite from COAST's first single, namely 'Sepia Eyes'. Then, in tribute to the Danish posse who had flown over especially for the show, COAST performed the one Runrig cover of the evening, 'In Scandinavia'.

The show approached the half way mark with 'To The Windward', another song from the new album and one which Runrig lead singer Bruce Guthro described as 'Awesome' when he first heard it on Karin Ingram's Sunday Getherin' show on Radio Borders.

COAST were then joined on stage by Georgette Cullum to sing backing vocals on a trio of songs - 'Keep Loving' and 'Reckless Engineer' from the album and 'These Walls' from the Great Crowd CD single.

Tam then returned to the stage to perform a stirring version of the 'Skye Boat Song' with Paul on piano. Spot the deliberate spelling mistake on the setlist...!

Talking of deliberate mistakes, the band then launched into album opener 'Oceanos' instead of the setlisted instrumental 'Ruabhal'. They'd have got away with it if it wasn't for the pesky lead singer announcing the gaff to the masses!

It mattered not to the pumped up audience as the band followed up 'Ruabhal' with the barnstorming 'Sword Dance', the song where Chris Lappage trades up to a lead guitar with a little more 'grunt'!

This brought us to the epic set closer 'America', the full stonking 9 minute version. As COAST left the stage to a roar of decibel busting proportions an encore was demanded and the band were happy to oblige with the rousing Southampton Football Club anthem 'Colours', complete with new opening accoustic arrangement.

COAST closed the show with a reprise of the signature live song 'Big Blue Sky'.

The event had been a huge success and the Talking Heads was left buzzing well into the night.

The album was snapped up by showgoers, some buying several for friends and family who couldn't attend. As glowing reviews of the album hit internet networking sites over the next 48 hours online albums sales exceeded all expecations to the point where the COAST website's bandwidth was creaking at the seams!

All in all, a truely amazing show which will hopefully catapult COAST to greater heights in 2010.

COAST Rock? You bet they did!

Successful launch show triggers
debut album sales rush!
A German music press agency has contacted COAST HQ to say that they heard COAST on Karin Ingram's Radio Borders show and want to review the CD and distribute it to the German press for publication.
The reporter had interviewed Bruce Guthro before and tuned in to Radio Borders to hear Bruce co-present the Sunday Getherin' show with Karin and was impressed with the COAST track 'To The Windward' and Bruce's positive verdict about the song and the band.

This interest can only help to bring a COAST tour to Germany a step closer....watch this space!

Keen on Debut COAST Album
The show was co-hosted by Runrig's Lead Singer Bruce Guthro.
Here is a brief transcript from the show after the track was played:

Karin: "What did you think to that then Bruce?"

Bruce: "Awesome! That's really, really, really good. I
hope the guys are listening there. That's a great song
and I love the guitar work in it. It's very Runrig-ish
actually. I'm sure other people have drawn that comparison.
I love it.

Karin: "And the lead singer actually does look quite like you!"

Bruce: "Does he?! Handsome devil!"
